Battle shields were conferred on personnel of the Army, Navy, Air Force or Waffen-SS who took part in a recognized campaign or bridgehead, underwent siege or took part in a breakout from an encirclement for which a shield was authorized.

The metal shield was normally affixed to cloth of the same color of the uniform to which it was usually sewn. In the absence of a cloth backing, the shield was affixed directly to the uniform by means of the prongs on the reverse of the shield. The recipient was authorized to wear the shield on the upper left sleeve of the service, walking-out dress and guard uniforms.
