Purple Heart

The Purple heart was initially awarded to those soldier and civilian personnel who were wounded in the First World War and earlier wars. When it was introduced, it ranked below all other decorations for valor or meritorious service. In 1985, Congress elevated it to a position immediately below the Bronze Star.
