Silver Star

The criteria for the award was amended by Congress on December 15, 1942 to include civilians serving with the armed forces. While the degree of heroism required for the award is of a lesser degree than that required for the Medal of Honor or Distinguished Service Cross it must nevertheless be performed with marked distinction. The Silver Star ranks third on the honor roll for combat bravery.
